The Engaged Global Citizen

What students value, and what they do

The POP score measures service. The Engaged Global Citizen measures the civic disposition behind it, across four dimensions, and sets each one against how much students say they value it. The distance between those two numbers is where most institutions find their work.

The four dimensions

What the EGC measures

Each dimension is scored from students' own reports of their knowledge, their demonstrated skills, and their behaviors. Every item is answered on a zero to ten scale, and each dimension resolves to a percentage of its maximum.

Diversity

Whether students work with people different from themselves, understand histories and beliefs other than their own, and can name the movements that shaped them.

Critical Thought

Whether students use evidence, logic, and credible sources, and whether they engage opposing views to understand rather than to win.

Political Involvement

Whether students vote, attend political events, or participate in organized efforts toward a public goal.

Social Justice

Whether students understand how power and privilege are distributed, and whether they act on that understanding.

National figures

Where the country sits

The national EGC score is 60. The four dimensions beneath it vary more than the single number suggests, and regional differences are real.

65Diversity
65Critical Thought
57Social Justice
53Political Involvement

Read together, the national pattern is consistent: students report valuing diversity and justice well above what their own behavior supports, while critical thought shows no distance between the two. Political involvement is the lowest score in the battery and the one most institutions are least prepared to discuss.

Regional overall EGC scores: Northeast 61, South 61, West 60, Midwest 55.

Reading it beside the POP score

Two measures, one picture

The POP score tells you how much service is happening. The EGC tells you what is underneath it. An institution with strong service in direct-need areas and a low political involvement score is looking at a service culture built on charity rather than public life, which is a different problem from simply serving less.

Taken together, the two answer the question a president is actually asked: whether the institution is producing graduates who serve, and whether it is producing citizens.

The EGC is included with the NASCE Core unless you choose to opt out.
